Dunbeg Fort
Dunbeg Fort, an Iron Age fortress, stands majestically on a headland of the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. It is an impressive example of a promontory fort, separated from the mainland by a series of earthen ramparts and ditches, with a history extending into the Middle Ages.
History+
The site, originally a circular structure of dry stone masonry, was built in the Iron Age and used until the Middle Ages. It is characterized by a successive expansion of fortifications, consisting of four earthen ramparts and five ditches. Part of the fort has succumbed to coastal erosion over time. The preserved wall is still six meters thick in sections and about three meters high. Noteworthy is the entrance area with small chambers within the wall and lateral openings for a locking beam. Inside, there are remains of a house with an unusual rectangular interior and round exterior shape, as well as a 16.5-meter-long souterrain.

Dunbeg Fort is located in Fahan, in County Kerry (Ciarraí) in the Munster (An Mhumhain) region, Ireland. It sits on a rocky headland directly on the R 559, the “Slea Head Road,” approximately 17 meters above sea level.
