The Domstift was founded in 792 by Charlemagne, who commissioned the missionary Liudger to establish a monastery at the Mimigernaford ford. Liudger, the first abbot of the Monasterium, transferred royal possessions to the monastery, including the Bispinghof and the Brockhof. In 799, Münster was declared a bishopric, and the monastery developed into the Cathedral Chapter of St. Paul. Over time, monastic life dissolved, and the members of the cathedral chapter, now canons, resided in their own curiae. The cathedral chapter acquired considerable land and judicial rights, thus rising to a leading position in the Prince-Bishopric of Münster and limiting the bishop's power. With the Prussian occupation in 1802, the cathedral chapter lost its importance and was dissolved in its original form in 1806. It was later re-established as a community of clerics without secular power and possessions, which today manages the cathedral, elects and advises the bishop.
