Meissen Cathedral

The origins of the sacred building date back to 968 when a small chapel was erected on this site for the founding of the Diocese of Meißen. This was expanded into a Romanesque basilica between 1006 and 1073. Around 1250, the construction of the current Gothic cathedral began, initially with the choir and transept. By 1268, these areas were already in use. Following a change of plan in the nave, which was originally intended as a basilica, it was uniformly executed as a seven-bay hall church and largely completed by 1410. Until 1581, the cathedral served as the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Meißen before becoming a Lutheran church. Today, it is the preaching church of the regional bishop of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Saxony.

The Cathedral Church of St. John and St. Donatus is located in the city of Meißen in the federal state of Saxony, Germany, on the historic Castle Hill above the old town.

Today, the cathedral church is an active sacred building of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Saxony and is a protected monument. It is a significant cultural monument and part of the historic Castle Hill ensemble.
