Dominikanerorden in Warburg

Syriac Orthodox Monastery

The former Dominican monastery in Warburg, located in Höxter, North Rhine-Westphalia, was a significant site for the Order of Preachers in the region for centuries. The monastery's history is marked by alternating phases of establishment, dissolution, and re-settlement, making it a remarkable testament to religious and cultural development.

History+

The Dominicans, a mendicant order founded in 1215, were called to Warburg in 1281 by Bishop Otto von Rietberg. They initially occupied an episcopal house near the old town church. The official confirmation as a convent was granted by the Order's General Chapter. Initially, the settlement faced resistance, particularly when the bishop transferred the old town church of St. Maria in vinea to the Dominicans and dissolved the old town parish. This conflict was resolved by the Dominicans constructing a new building on a mountain spur and relinquishing the old town parish. A monastic school was established on the new monastery grounds, which later developed into the Gymnasium Marianum. In 1810, the order was legally suppressed by a decree from King Jérôme Bonaparte. The subsequent Prussian occupation led to the dissolution of the monastery and school in 1824. The assets were confiscated, and the buildings nationalized. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Dominicans returned to Warburg and in 1908 occupied a newly constructed building on Klosterstraße. However, this monastery was abandoned in 1993 in favor of the Dominican monastery of St. Paulus in Worms.
