St Katharinen in Stralsund

The foundation of the Dominican monastery in the 13th century was initiated by Prince Jaromar II, with its first documented mention dating back to 1251. Prince Witzlaw II donated the building site in 1261. The completion of the original complex, which included an approximately 70-meter-long, three-aisled hall church, is documented for the year 1317. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery underwent expansions, including the chapter house with its remarkable 15th-century vault paintings. The monastery's significance is underscored by its hosting of several Dominican order chapters between the 14th and early 16th centuries in Stralsund. With the Reformation in 1525, the monastery was dissolved and became property of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, marking the end of its original function.

The former Dominican monastery is centrally located in the Old Town of Stralsund, a city in the Vorpommern-Rügen region of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The precise address is Mönchstraße No. 25–27, with an associated gatehouse at Katharinenberg No. 14. The entire Old Town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”.

Following its secularization during the Reformation, the monastery building served various purposes. Today, it houses two of Stralsund's most significant museums: The Stralsund Museum of Cultural History is located in the former cloister buildings, while the former hall church forms the main seat of the German Oceanographic Museum. The complex is a protected cultural monument.
