Dominikanerkloster St. Paulus

The Dominican Monastery of St. Paul in Worms was founded in 1929, utilizing the church and adjacent buildings of the former St. Paul's Collegiate Church. An earlier Dominican establishment existed from 1226 to 1802 before being dissolved during secularization. In the 1920s, the Teutonia Province of the Dominicans expressed renewed interest in establishing a presence in Worms. This led to the creation of a new establishment in 1925. St. Paul's Church, previously used as a museum, underwent renovation and received an altar relocated from St. Peter's Church in Herrnsheim before its reconsecration on May 16, 1929. In 1933, the convent comprised twelve members. During the National Socialist era, the work of the Dominicans was restricted as they were considered ideological opponents by the authorities. Reactions to public statements, especially sermons, were unpredictable; while some went without consequence, others led to protective custody. During World War II, the church and convent buildings were damaged in air raids on Worms, with the church being destroyed on February 21, 1945, and only becoming usable again from 1947. In 1965, the convent had thirteen members, but this number steadily declined in subsequent years. In 1988, the monastery was classified as a "domus formata," with a superior appointed by the provincial instead of an elected prior. Following structural renovation of the cloister, the novitiate, the training of novices for the entire Teutonia Province, was moved from the closed Warburg monastery to Worms in 1993, elevating the establishment back to a convent with seven members. In 2002, the convent still had seven members and four novices. By the end of 2023, the number had decreased to just three convent members. In 2023, the novice training was transferred to the Dominican Convent of St. Mary in Vechta. Given the small number of members and more favorable structural conditions at the order's neighboring establishment in Mainz, the provincial chapter decided to close the monastery in Worms. On Easter Monday, April 1, 2024, the Dominicans departed from Worms.

The convent members were active in St. Paul's Church through services, sermons, and pastoral care. Furthermore, since 1997, they were involved in pastoral care at Worms Hospital and other institutions, and since 1993, in prison ministry at the Darmstadt correctional facility. Cultural events also took place in the cloister of St. Paul.
