The Dominican Monastery of St. Katharina in Brandenburg an der Havel, founded in 1225, represents a significant historical testimony of the region. Although only small parts of the original building complex remain, they bear witness to the former presence of the Dominican Order in the city.

History+

The Dominicans settled in Brandenburg an der Havel in 1225. For centuries, the order dedicated itself to pastoral care and catechesis. In the course of the Reformation, which prevailed in the region in 1524, the Monastery of St. Katharina was dissolved in 1528. The remaining monastery buildings underwent various reuses in the following centuries, including as a municipal armory and later as a warehouse. A large part of the historical building fabric was lost over time due to alterations and demolitions. Today, the few remaining parts of the monastery are protected as cultural monuments.

Location+

The former Monastery of St. Katharina is located in Brandenburg an der Havel, a city in the federal state of Brandenburg, Germany. The monastery's location is approximately 17 meters above sea level.

On site+

The minor remains of the former monastery are now integrated into modern developments. Some historical vaults of the cloister and the refectory are preserved and are used for gastronomy, embedded within the Katharinen-Hochgarage and the Katharinen-Passage. They are protected as a cultural monument.
