Dominikanerkloster Rottweil

The origins of the convent of preachers in Rottweil date back to the 13th century, with its foundation likely stemming from Esslingen and Freiburg. In 1266, the convent was officially recognized by the Teutonia province of the order. Duke Conradin of Swabia placed the young convent under the protection of Rottweil's citizens in 1267. The monastery received a special honor in 1268 with a visit from Albertus Magnus, who issued an indulgence for the construction of the monastery church. Consecrated to Saints Peter and Paul, the church was completed in 1282. Over the centuries, the monastery developed into an intellectual center with a studium and libraries. After the Reformation, the Dominican monastery became an important stronghold of the Catholic faith in the imperial city. In the 17th century, it experienced a revival, particularly through a flourishing pilgrimage triggered by a miraculous image. This led to a comprehensive Baroque renovation of the monastery and church starting in 1739 under Prior Hermenegild Linsenmann, who collaborated with renowned artists. From 1709, the Rottweil convent of preachers belonged to the Saxonia province of the order.

The dissolution of the monastery occurred on December 29, 1802, by Württemberg troops. The preacher's church was immediately closed, and the miraculous image was transferred to the Holy Cross Minster. By January 2, 1803, the Dominicans had left the monastery, which was completely cleared out in the same year. The preacher's church served as an evangelical garrison church from 1806 and as an evangelical city church from 1818, largely retaining its Baroque splendor. The monastery buildings were initially used militarily, then as a school from 1827, and were demolished in 1972. Today, the Dominican Museum stands on this site.

The Dominican Museum Rottweil, a branch museum of the State Museum Württemberg, is now located on the site of the former monastery. The former monastery church continues to serve as an evangelical city church.
