The monastery's founding in 1275 is attributed to Margrave Johann I, who granted the Dominicans permission to settle there to consolidate Brandenburg's rule in the Uckermark. Margrave Johann II is considered the founder of the community. By 1308, the convent was already one of the wealthiest Dominican monasteries in the March. A fire in 1519 affected the monastery's economic situation, and its further development until its dissolution during the Reformation in 1545 is not fully documented. Since 1930, the complex has been used as a museum, and after a wartime interruption, museum activities resumed in 1957. The church has served the St. Nikolai parish since 1577.
