Dominikanerkloster Mergentheim

The precise founding period of the Dominican Monastery Mergentheim is between 1265 and 1275, with 1270 considered the most probable start of construction. The order received support from regional noble families and the urban patriciate. In 1316, initial conflicts with the Knights Hospitaller occurred. Construction of the St. Mary's Church began in 1320 and continued until approximately 1380. In 1362, the Dominicans clashed with the Teutonic Order over municipal regulations. The monastery remained relatively insignificant until the 18th century. Following substantial damage from unrest in 1525 and the death of the last conventual in 1547, the monastery came under the administration of the Teutonic Order from 1549. The church was severely damaged in 1552 during the Margrave War and subsequently fell into disrepair. From 1554, the monastery was reoccupied with the support of the Bishop of Würzburg. Between 1566 and 1586, disputes arose regarding the funding of church renovations. In 1700, the Dominicans took over the establishment and management of a gymnasium. The monastery was dissolved on May 31, 1805, and subsequently served as a seminary, barracks, school, and magazine. St. Mary's Church was an evangelical city church from 1809 to 1817 and has been Catholic again since 1852.

The former Dominican Monastery is situated on the southern edge of the core town of Mergentheim in the Main-Tauber district of Baden-Württemberg. It lies at an elevation of approximately 212 meters above sea level.

The former monastery building is a two-story, four-winged convent structure, directly attached to the south side of the current St. Mary's Church. It is a cultural monument in Germany and underwent Baroque alterations in the 17th/18th century.
