Dominikanerkloster Meldorf

The precise founding date of the Dominican Monastery Meldorf remains unclear due to the loss of monastic records. It is believed that the Dominican settlement occurred between 1319 and 1380, with the first documented mention of the convent appearing in the monastery directory of the Province of Saxonia in 1380. The monastery was dedicated to the Mother of God, Mary, and for a long time was the sole monastic institution in Dithmarschen. It played a role in regional history, particularly after the Battle of Oldenwöhrde in 1319, when it received donations and was obliged to hold masses for the protection of the peasant republic. In the course of the Reformation, Meldorf Monastery was dissolved around 1530.

The former Dominican Monastery Meldorf was situated in the town of Meldorf in Dithmarschen, a region within the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany.

The former monastery buildings are now protected as a cultural monument in Schleswig-Holstein. An engraving from 1596 depicts two stone buildings that towered over the neighboring half-timbered houses and were presumably connected by a cloister.
