The foundation of the monastery dates back to 1271, when Sophie von Hirschberg, together with her sons Gerhard and Gebhard VII, donated land on the northeastern city wall of Eichstätt for the Dominicans. The construction plan was designed by the Dominican Adalbero von Mässingen. As early as 1274 or 1275, the monastery was elevated to a fully-fledged convent, settled from Regensburg or Augsburg.
