Dominikanerkloster Berlin-Cölln

The first mention of the monastery dates back to 1297. It comprised a residential tower, a cemetery, and a three-aisled hall church, the construction of which was completed by around 1350. In 1443, Elector Frederick Iron Tooth began building the Berlin Palace, his residence, northeast of the monastery grounds. Elector Joachim II dissolved the monastery in 1535 with papal permission and relocated the remaining friars. From 1536, he magnificently transformed the monastery church into the court and cathedral church of the Hohenzollerns, adding two towers and connecting it to the neighboring palace. The church was dedicated to Saints Mary Magdalene, Erasmus, and the Holy Cross. Joachim II also commissioned a Passion cycle from Lucas Cranach the Elder, of which nine central panels survive and are now housed in Jagdschloss Grunewald. The Hohenzollern burial site, including the bronze tomb of Johann Cicero, was also transferred here from Lehnin Monastery. After Joachim's conversion to Lutheranism in 1539, the tower was converted into a bell tower in 1552. Around 1600, Elector Joachim Frederick transformed the collegiate church into Berlin's main church. The tower was demolished in 1716, and the cathedral itself followed in 1747 due to dilapidation. The sarcophagi of the electors were transferred to the newly built Berlin Cathedral in 1749. Foundation remains and burials were discovered in 1873 during sewage work and in 1961 during the construction of the State Council Building. Since 2008, archaeologists have been investigating the foundation remains of the monastery on Berlin's Schlossplatz.

Today, only foundation remains of the former Dominican Monastery Berlin-Cölln are preserved. These are protected as a cultural monument and are subject to ongoing archaeological investigations.
