Dominikanerkloster Augsburg

The foundation of the monastery dates back to 1225, when the first Dominican monks settled in Augsburg. This settlement was significantly supported by local citizens. In 1313, Bishop Friedrich I transferred the church and house of the recently dissolved Knights Templar to the Dominicans. Until the Reformation, the Dominicans maintained close ties with the city of Augsburg and were supported by influential families such as the Fuggers. A new monastery building was constructed between 1496 and 1523, with the current monastery church of St. Magdalena built from 1513 to 1515 on the foundations of a previous structure. During the Reformation, the convent had to leave the city temporarily but returned in 1548. During the Thirty Years' War, the monks were again expelled. In the 18th century, the interior of the monastery church underwent a Baroque redesign. The secularization by Bavaria in 1807 finally led to the dissolution of the monastery.

The monastery was located in Augsburg, a significant city in Bavaria, Germany. It was situated in today's Lechviertel district, eastern Ulrichsviertel, on a natural hillside that separates Augsburg's upper town from the Lechviertel.

The former Dominican Church of St. Magdalena is today the last visible remnant of the monastery, which was destroyed in World War II. It is listed as a monument in the Bavarian monument list.
