Dominikanerkloster Aachen

The first documented mention of the Dominican Monastery dates back to 1293. As early as the 13th century, Dominicans had a 'Terminei' in Aachen, a lodging for traveling preachers. In 1293, members of the order acquired a plot of land on Jakobstraße and began constructing the monastery along with an initial oratory dedicated to the Apostle Paul. Over the centuries, the order's influence in Aachen grew through numerous donations and endowments, which enabled them to build a full-fledged monastery church by the end of the 14th century. This wealth led to complaints from the city in 1346. The monastery also received the right to teach philosophy, until this right was transferred to the Jesuit community in 1686. A major city fire in 1656 destroyed large parts of the monastery and many archival documents. Reconstruction was funded by donations collected by order members on their travels. In 1802, the monastery was secularized during the French occupation. The monastery church of St. Paul was used as a parish church from 1804, while the convent building was taken over by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus in 1848.

The former Dominican Monastery is located in the Aachen city region, in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany.

The former monastery church of St. Paul, which was deconsecrated in 2009, now houses the Diocesan Archive of the Diocese of Aachen. The former convent building is used by the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus. Both buildings have been listed as historical monuments since the 1980s.
