Dominikanerinnenkloster Steinheim

The Dominican convent of Steinheim, once known as Mariental Monastery, is a historic sacred building located in Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg. This former monastic complex is distinguished by its rich history and regional significance, traceable back to the 13th century.
History+
The monastery was founded in 1254 by Elisabeth von Blankenstein, née von Steinheim, and her husband Berthold von Blankenstein. Pope Innocent IV had already approved the monastery's establishment in 1251. The endowment included the patronage rights of the church in Steinheim, as well as the village of Jux and other possessions. The Rule of Saint Augustine formed the basis of monastic life. Soon after its foundation, the monastery acquired further properties, including a farm from Margrave Rudolf of Baden in 1255, which formed the structural foundation of the complex. In 1261, Pope Urban IV officially incorporated the monastery into the Dominican Order, a decision also approved by Bishop Heinrich of Speyer in 1262. In the late 13th century, Mariental achieved the status of imperial immediacy and exercised dominion over Steinheim. By the early 16th century, it was among the wealthiest monasteries in Württemberg. In the course of the Württemberg Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1582, after the nuns had resisted pressure to abandon their faith for decades.
