Kloster Reuthin

The Dominican convent of Reutin, once located in Wildberg in the district of Calw, represents a significant testament to medieval sacred architecture and monastic culture in Baden-Württemberg. The complex, which played a central role in regional history for centuries, is now only partially preserved but houses a local history museum that keeps the site's history alive.
History+
The convent of Reutin was founded between 1252 and 1284 as a Dominican convent, endowed by Burkhard IV von Hohenberg. It developed into the ancestral convent of the Counts of Hohenberg, with numerous daughters of this noble family, as well as the regional lower nobility and burgher families from surrounding towns, entering here and contributing their dowries. From 1313, a Beguine hermitage also existed, which was expanded with a new building in 1470. The convent was characterized by remarkable economic stability in the late Middle Ages. In 1525, the complex was plundered during the Peasants' War. The Reformation in the Duchy of Württemberg led to the dissolution of the convent under Duke Ulrich of Württemberg, after the nuns refused to accept the reformist confession from 1535 onwards. A settlement in 1559 initiated a lengthy process of secularization. From 1570, the buildings served as a monastic steward's office. A major fire in 1824 destroyed the church and the main building.
