Kloster Galiläa

residential building

The former Dominican convent of Galiläa, located in the Hochsauerlandkreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, is a historically significant site whose origins date back to the late Middle Ages. Today, a remaining wing of the building is protected as a listed monument and bears witness to the order's former presence in the region.

History+

The foundation of Galiläa convent took place in 1484, after the Dominican nuns of the Klausenkapelle from Klausenberg acquired the village of Hückelheim in February 1483 through a donation from the married couple Henneke von Berninghausen and Margaretha von Hückelheim. Previously, the nuns lived in a hermitage near St. Michael's Chapel. The convent was spiritually supervised by the Dominican monastery of Soest. Around 1750, the original building was demolished and replaced by a new, four-winged structure. In 1810, the convent was secularized as the last institution of its kind in Westphalia. After initial resistance from the nuns, led by Prioress Pranghe, the dissolution was symbolically carried out by forcibly extinguishing the hearth fire, after which the Dominican nuns moved out on December 14, 1810. The church and three of the convent wings were demolished in 1860.
