Dominikanerinnen Abbey Friesach
The Dominican Convent of Friesach is a significant sacred building in Carinthia, Austria. Located north of the Friesach city moat, the church impresses with its length of 74 meters, making it the largest church building in Carinthia. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
History+
The monastery in Friesach was founded as early as 1217, making it the oldest Dominican monastery in the entire German-speaking world. After 1255, the Dominicans moved to their current location. Construction of the nave began shortly thereafter and was completed between 1265 and 1268. The long choir followed around 1270/80. The church was consecrated in 1300 and 1320, with the chapel-like sacristy being added in the latter year. In 1509, Balthasar Thanhausen endowed the Dominikus Chapel on the south aisle. An extensive restoration of the church took place from 1596 to 1626. In 1690, Lorenz Moser replaced the original beamed ceiling with a cross-rib vault. Following a fire, a new painting and partial refurnishing, including the Neo-Gothic high altar, occurred from 1884 to 1895.
