Dominikanerinnenkloster Frauenaurach

The Dominican convent was founded in 1267 by Herdegen von Gründlach. Under Prioress Elisabeth Auer, the convent experienced an economic boom between 1436 and 1451. During the Peasants' War around 1525, the complex was plundered, and the convent had to flee to Nuremberg. After their return under Prioress Kunigunde von Wallenrod, the convent came under the rule of the Margrave of Brandenburg. The introduction of Lutheran doctrine around 1531 led to significant destruction by Nuremberg mercenaries. After the death of Prioress Kunigunde in 1549, the property passed entirely into the possession of the Margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach, and a convent office was established, which existed until 1796. From 1616, Frauenaurach served as a small margravial secondary residence. The remaining parts of the convent complex that had escaped destruction were largely demolished in 1862, with some fragments displayed inside the church, as well as wall remains of the cloister and dormitory, preserved. The striking tower with its Welsche Haube was only built by 1717.

Frauenaurach Convent is situated in Frauenaurach, a district of Erlangen, in the Erlangen-Höchstadt region of Bavaria, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of 283 meters above sea level.

Today, only a few remnants of the original convent complex remain. These include wall remains of the cloister and dormitory on the west side of the cemetery, as well as the outline of the former inner courtyard, which now serves as an old cemetery. Some farm buildings, such as a forge and a mill, can also be found in the immediate vicinity. The current church tower dates from the early 18th century.
