Kloster Engelthal

The establishment of Engelthal Abbey in 1243 was a direct consequence of the power struggles between imperial and papal authority in the 13th century. A group of Beguines, expelled from the imperial city of Nuremberg, found refuge in Engelschalkesdorf, where the imperial ministerialis Ulrich II von Königstein transferred estates in the village of Swina (Schweinach) to them. This laid the economic foundation for the future monastery, which was dedicated to John the Baptist. Under the guidance of chaplain Ulschalk von Vilseck, the construction of a church began. The ecclesiastical foundation took place in June 1244 by Bishop Friedrich II of Eichstätt, who confirmed the Augustinian Rule with the statutes of the Sisters of St. Sixtus in Rome. Dietmund von Gaylenhausen became the first prioress. In 1248, Pope Innocent IV incorporated the monastery into the Dominican Order. In the following decades, Engelthal rapidly developed into one of the most important landed estates in the region due to numerous donations. By around 1300, the monastery owned 175 farms and estates in 54 localities. This period of economic prosperity was also a golden age of spirituality. In the 16th century, the monastery faced demands for reform due to a perceived decline in discipline and order. Despite mild reform attempts, the prioress and subprioress were replaced by new patrician women in 1512. The Reformation ultimately led to the dissolution of the monastery. After Nuremberg converted to Protestantism, the admission of new members was prohibited. The dissolution occurred gradually after the death of the last nuns.

The remains of the former monastery are now protected as an archaeological monument in Bavaria, testifying to the site's past significance.
