Dominikanerinnenkloster Engeltal

The origins of Engeltal convent date back to 1292, when it was founded by the knight Hans von Weitingen. The official establishment took place around 1295. Initially, the religious institution was under the protection of the Lords of Fürstenberg. In 1372, it was sold to Württemberg, and in 1527, the convent passed into the possession of the Tübingen Hospital. Following the Reformation and the transfer of its assets to the ecclesiastical administration in Dornstetten in 1588, the convent began its decline and was subsequently abandoned.

The former Engeltal convent was situated in Hallwangen, a district of Dornstetten, in the Freudenstadt district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Today, only a wall remnant in the area of the current church of Hallwangen remains of the original convent complex. A baptismal font from a former penitential chapel belonging to the convent can be found in the church of Herzogsweiler. A convent mill, whose history was also linked to Engeltal, existed in Hallwangen until 1993/94.
