Dominican Monastery

The monastery's origins date back to 1233, when Bishop Siegfried of Regensburg donated a building site for a community of pious women. Four years later, the parish of Schwarzhofen was granted to the monastery for its financing, enabling the construction of a church. This was built between 1237 and 1244, featuring a single-nave longhouse and a three-sided choir. In 1246, the convent was officially handed over to the Dominican Order. A Romanesque crucifix, which gave the monastery its name, was moved into the church in 1669. Reform efforts led to the incorporation of sisters from the St. Katharinen Convent in Nuremberg in 1484. During the secularization after 1800, the monastery survived on the condition of opening a girls' school. From 1853, under Prioress Benedikta Bauer, new foundations were established in Niederviehbach and the USA. The church underwent extensive Rococo-style renovation from 1751 to around 1757, significantly shaped by Simon Sorg, Johann Baptist Modler, and Otto Gebhard. Severely damaged in World War II, the convent church was restored from 1980 to 1983.

The Dominican Convent is located in the city of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 339 meters above sea level. It is situated in the northwestern part of the old town.

The monastery continues to exist today and is the oldest continuously operating Dominican women's monastery in Germany that has never been dissolved. The Holy Cross convent church, in its current form, is a significant example of Bavarian Rococo.
