Visby Cathedral

Construction of St. Mary's Church began in the 12th century as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica with a transept and a western tower, built from local limestone. Originally conceived as a church for German sailors and merchants of the Gotland trade, it was consecrated to the Virgin Mary in 1225. Over time, the church underwent several renovations and extensions, including the enlargement of the nave into a hall church and the addition of a choir and eastern towers. Hanseatic merchants even temporarily used the nave as a storage space for trade goods. Around 1300, a large chapel was added to the south side, and the western tower reached its current height in 1423. After the destruction of Visby's other medieval churches in 1525 by Lübeck troops, St. Mary's Church remained intact and was elevated to a bishop's church in 1572.

Visby Cathedral is located in Visby on the island of Gotland, which belongs to the Gotland region in Sweden. It stands at an elevation of approximately 28 meters above sea level.

Today, Visby Cathedral continues to serve as an active church. Visitors can admire its rich furnishings, including historic stained glass windows, altars, a significant 12th-century baptismal font, and a 17th-century pulpit. Numerous epitaphs from various centuries bear witness to the building's long history.
