Uppsala Cathedral

The relocation of the bishop's see after a fire in the Old Uppsala Cathedral received papal approval, initiating plans for the new building as early as 1258. The foundation stone was laid in 1260, but wars, dynastic disputes, building collapses, and the plague led to significant delays. It was not until 1435 that the cathedral could be consecrated under Archbishop Olaus Laurentii. A devastating city fire in 1702 destroyed the spires, which were replaced with Baroque domes under architect Carl Hårleman. In the 19th century, these were in turn replaced by the pointed towers visible today, under the direction of Helgo Zettervall. The cathedral houses relics of Erik the Holy in a gilded shrine and, since the 1980s, a piece of Saint Birgitta's hip bone in a modern reliquary. Among the personalities buried here are Gustav I Vasa and Carl Linnaeus.

Today, the cathedral continues to serve as an active church. Visitors can explore a museum of ecclesiastical textiles in the northern tower. Stone statues from the 14th century are displayed at the southern portal.
