St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildesheim

St. Michael's Church was founded by Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim, who, as Otto III's tutor and connoisseur of ancient art, sought to create comparable structures and art treasures in the Ottonian Empire. He consecrated the church and found his final resting place in its crypt. The Cathedral of St. Mary, however, existed before Bernward's tenure, but its current appearance dates back to a new construction under Bishop Hezilo. Nevertheless, Bernward commissioned significant bronze castings for the cathedral, including the Bernward Doors and the Christ Column, which stand in the tradition of Roman triumphal columns.

These two historic sacred buildings are located in the city of Hildesheim, a significant city in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Both churches suffered severe damage during World War II and underwent extensive reconstruction in the post-war period. The aim was to recreate their medieval appearance based on the latest scientific findings. St. Michael's Church today impresses with its pre-Romanesque spatial concept, which omitted Gothic elements present before its destruction during restoration. In the Cathedral of St. Mary, after the 2014 renovation, important artworks, such as the Hezilo Chandelier, were optimally positioned within the church space.
