Dom St. Blasien

St. Blasien Cathedral, a prominent example of Neoclassical architecture, is located in the Waldshut region of Baden-Württemberg. This sacred building, protected as a cultural monument, is distinguished by its impressive dome, which, with a span of 36 meters, is among the largest in Europe.
History+
The history of St. Blasien Cathedral begins with a Romanesque structure, the so-called New Minster, built between 1086 and 1108, which was an important representative of the Hirsau school of architecture. After fires in 1322 and 1526, which necessitated extensive repairs, the New Minster was reconsecrated in 1538. During the Thirty Years' War, the monks fled, and in the 18th century, a large Baroque monastery complex was built. A devastating fire in 1768 destroyed the medieval minster church. Under Prince-Abbot Martin Gerbert, a new building in the Zopfstil was commissioned, designed by the French architect Pierre Michel d’Ixnard after the model of the Pantheon in Rome. This new building, consecrated in 1783, was then the third-largest domed church in Europe. Prince-Abbot Gerbert also arranged for the transfer of the remains of earlier Habsburgs from Basel and Königsfelden to St. Blasien in 1770, to strengthen the political significance of the monastery.
