Deutschordenskommende Lucklum

The Deutschordenskommende Lucklum, a historic monastery in the Wolfenbüttel region of Lower Saxony, was once an important seat of the Teutonic Order. The complex, now protected as a historical monument, bears witness to a long and eventful history.
History+
The origins of the commandery lie in the enfeoffment of the Teutonic Order with Elmsburg Castle in 1213. From 1260, the Order acquired lands in Lucklum, and in 1263, Bishop Volrad of Halberstadt gifted the church and other farmsteads. Around 1264, the seat of the commandery was moved from Elmsburg to Lucklum, and from 1287, the Landkomtur resided here. The commandery, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, was secularized in 1809. During the Reformation, the commandery converted to Protestantism in 1542 and subsequently served as a foundation for unmarried noblemen. After extensive damage during the Thirty Years' War, the complex was rebuilt. Important Landkomturs, such as Friedrich Wilhelm von Hardenberg, contributed to its development by establishing the Lucklum merino sheep breeding. His nephew Novalis spent some time here around 1784.

The complex, now known as Rittergut Lucklum, has undergone multiple renovations and reuses. The oldest part is the Romanesque hall church, constructed from Erkerode trochite limestone, with its westwork dating back to before the Order's settlement. The church, along with other buildings, forms a square inner courtyard. Today, the Rittergut hosts various small businesses.
