The Teutonic Order Commandery Heilbronn is a historic monastery located in the city of Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg. As a significant cultural monument in Germany, this sacred building presents itself in an impressive Baroque style.

History+

The founding of the Teutonic Order Commandery Heilbronn is dated to the 1220s. The associated church, originally known as St. Mary's Chapel in the 13th century, traces its origins back to an even older predecessor building. Between 1225 and 1235, the first Romanesque order church was built from sandstone, dedicated to St. Mary. Its late Romanesque choir tower on the ground floor houses a Romanesque sarcophagus altar from the mid-13th century. Due to its growing importance as a pilgrimage church, St. Mary's Chapel was expanded in the Gothic style between 1340 and 1360. This new construction included a three-aisled pillar hall. A further comprehensive expansion took place from 1490 to 1510 under the master builders Hans von Karstädt, von Welden, and von Liebenstein, with the nave being raised and the choir extended in the late Gothic style. The consecration on April 25, 1510, led to its renaming as "Church of Our Lady," later known simply as Frauenkirche. In the late 15th century, the Speydel Chapel was built on the north side of the choir, but it was demolished in 1968 in favor of a new sacristy.
