German Orthodox Holy Trinity Monastery

The German Orthodox Holy Trinity Monastery in Holzminden, Lower Saxony, is a unique Orthodox monastic settlement. It is the sole monastery of the Bulgarian Orthodox Diocese of Western and Central Europe and remarkable for its architecture, which blends Byzantine stylistic elements with Saxon pre-Romanesque design.
History+
The monastery's origins trace back to 1985, when a small Orthodox community of three men in West Berlin began a shared religious life, preparing for a monastic foundation. After successfully raising funds and establishing a foundation, a suitable plot of land in Buchhagen was acquired in 1990. Under the guidance of Abbot Johannes Pfeiffer, who had previously received monastic tonsure on Mount Athos, the monks began constructing a convent building with a chapel and a crypt. By Easter 1992, the community was able to move into the completed first phase. The monastery was consecrated in 1994 by the Bulgarian Orthodox Metropolitan Symeon, and the crypt was consecrated in 1996. In June 2021, construction of the monastery church over the existing crypt commenced.
