Parliamentary History Exhibition

The German Cathedral in Berlin, a prominent neo-Baroque landmark in the city's heart, stands on Gendarmenmarkt. It is renowned for its impressive dome and historical significance as part of the architectural ensemble defining the square. Although referred to as a "Cathedral" (Dom), the domed tower never served as a bishop's church; its name derives from the French word "dôme" for dome.

The origins of the German Cathedral date back to 1785 when the domed tower was added to the existing New or German Church. King Frederick II commissioned its construction to enhance the beauty of Gendarmenmarkt. Carl von Gontard designed the tower in the Baroque style. After suffering significant damage during World War II, a comprehensive reconstruction took place between 1983 and 1996. The exterior was faithfully restored to its original state, while the interior was given a modern design.

The structure is situated in Berlin's Mitte district, directly on Gendarmenmarkt. It is a central point in the German capital and belongs to the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia. As a listed building, it is protected as a historical monument.
