Detmold Augustinian Canonesses Monastery

The monastery in Detmold was founded in 1453 as a branch of a sisters' house in Lemgo. Both communities were strongly influenced by the spiritual movement of Devotio moderna. The Sisters of the Common Life, also known as “Süsterhaus,” adopted the Augustinian Rule between 1456 and 1459. In 1476, the Detmold house gained its independence and was integrated into the local parish and diocesan association. The convent comprised up to 40 women, mainly from Detmold and the surrounding region. A mater led the community, while a cleric, called rector or pater, was responsible for confession and pastoral care. Through wool weaving and cloth production, the monastery generated the means to expand its precinct, erect new buildings, and establish its own manorial estate, whose agricultural lands were primarily located north and northeast of the city. After 1538, the Reformation in Detmold led to a decline in the number of conventuals and a loss of economic power. From 1560, the monastery was forced to sell off property. Count Simon VI finally dissolved the monastery in 1577. The last conventual died in 1615. The monastery buildings subsequently passed into private ownership and later into the possession of Princess Pauline zur Lippe, who established a crèche, an orphanage, a nursing home, and a teacher training college there. With the exception of the monastery gate, the last buildings were demolished in 1890. The late Gothic monastery church served as the first school building of the Gymnasium Leopoldinum from 1602 and was later converted for library purposes. From 1721 to 1741, the Evangelical-Lutheran parish of Detmold used it as a place of worship before it was demolished in 1832.

Today, only a part of the monastery gate on Schülerstraße in Detmold remains of the former monastery complex. This fragment is a protected monument and serves as a visible testament to the historical significance of the site.
