Degenfeldsches Castle (Groß-Karben)
The Degenfeld Castle is a modern castle complex in the center of Groß-Karben, part of the city of Karben in the Wetteraukreis district of Hesse.
The castle was built in 1728 by Anna-Maria von Hutten-Stolzenberg zu Steinbach, initially as a single-story building with a mansard roof. Previously, a country estate belonging to her father-in-law Helfrich von Kroneck, which he had built in 1673/74, stood on the site. In 1766, it was acquired by the Palatine Privy Councillor von Kronenberg. Around 1800, the western main wing and the south wing were extended upwards. Around 1810, it was bought by the Austrian General von Degenfeld-Schomburg, from whom it received its current name.
After his death, it was initially sold to a farmer before the municipality of Groß-Karben acquired the castle in 1868. Since then, the castle has housed the mayor's office, police, school, municipal bath, library, apartments, and club rooms. Today, in addition to apartments, the castle also contains a small museum.
Complex+
The three-winged complex, facing west, is externally very simple and in great need of renovation. The street-side northern side wing still bears the original mansard roof and is single-story, while the other two, two-story wings have hip roofs. Above the main entrance is a gabled dormer. Of the outbuildings, only a single-story tract along Westliche Ringstraße has monument status. It probably dates from the early 19th century.
