The Damascus Gate, also known as Sha'ar Shechem, is a significant structure of Jerusalem's city fortifications. It is located in the north of Jerusalem's Old City and is considered one of the largest and most architecturally appealing gates of the historic walls.
History+
The origins of the Damascus Gate stretch back a long way. Even during the time of Emperor Hadrian, a city gate stood at this location in the northern wall of what was then Aelia Capitolina. A Roman victory column erected at that time gave the gate its Arabic name "Column Gate" and was still visible on the Madaba Map from the 6th century. The current Damascus Gate was built between 1535 and 1538 as part of the extensive renovation of Jerusalem's city walls under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
