The origins of Clonyn Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was built by Gilbert de Nugent, then Baron of Delvin. During Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Ireland, the complex suffered severe damage from a fire. However, in 1639, the castle was rebuilt by Richard Nugent, the 1st Earl of Westmeath. It remained in the possession of the Nugent family until 1922, when it was sold by Patrick Nugent.
