Jaroslawl Abbay (Спасо-Преображенский монастырь)

The Transfiguration of Christ Monastery in Yaroslavl is a significant former Russian Orthodox male monastery, located on the left bank of the Kotorosl River, near its confluence with the Volga. It is considered the oldest sacred building in the city and today houses one of the most important museum complexes in the region.
History+
The monastery's founding is believed to be in the 12th century, just a few decades after the city of Yaroslavl itself, although the first documentary mention dates back to 1216. From the outset, it served not only religious purposes but also defense, and was therefore surrounded by protective walls. Originally built of wood, the construction of stone buildings only began after a major fire in 1501, with the Transfiguration of Christ Cathedral completed in 1516. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the monastery was an important burial site for princes and nobility. After Yaroslavl lost its independence in the 15th century, it became a pilgrimage site for Moscow princes and tsars. In the 16th century, the monastery gained great wealth and, thanks to its stone protective walls, was able to repel a siege by Polish-Lithuanian troops. At the end of the 18th century, the monastery was dissolved, but a seminary was established there, which existed until the 20th century. Since the 1920s, the former monastery has served as a museum and has been the main component of the Yaroslavl State Museum-Reserve since 1959. Since 2005, as part of Yaroslavl's Old Town, it has been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Location+
The monastery is located in Yaroslavl, in the Yaroslavl district, in the Central Russia region, Russia, at an elevation of approximately 100 m above sea level.
