Château de Valère
Château Valère, an impressive castle complex, is perched on one of the two prominent castle hills above Sion in the canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is not only a testament to medieval architecture but also houses one of the oldest playable organs in the world.
History+
The origins of the complex date back to Celtic times. The castle and church were first documented in 1049. Between 1100 and 1130, the oldest Romanesque parts of the three-nave basilica were built. In the 13th century, the church underwent expansions, including a ribbed vault in the nave and the installation of a rood screen. The castle complex itself served as the residence of the cathedral chapter from the 11th or 12th century. In 1987, Pope John Paul II bestowed the honorary title of Basilica minor upon the church.
