Château Mercier (Sierre)

Cultural center

Château Mercier, originally known as Pradegg Castle, stands majestically on the heights of Sierre. This impressive edifice, bearing the name of a prominent tanner family from Lausanne, combines architectural elegance with expansive park grounds and now serves as a vibrant cultural center.

History+

Between 1906 and 1908, the castle was built as a summer residence for Jean-Jacques Mercier and Marie de Molin and their family. Architect Chabloz designed the plans in the Aostan style, while Marie Mercier de Molin personally oversaw the landscaping of the surrounding park. For over half a century, Château Mercier served as a retreat for the family's descendants. In 1970, the Mercier family pledged a donation to the Canton of Valais, which became effective in 1991. This included the 37,126 m² estate with the castle, three residences, outbuildings, and a renowned park. The donation was conditional on keeping the gardens publicly accessible and using the castle for cultural, artistic, and public purposes. Additionally, artworks and furniture, including paintings by E. Bieler and L. Rivier, remained in the castle until 2020. To fulfill these conditions, Château Mercier was transformed into a cultural meeting center. A foundation established in 1992, comprising the Canton of Valais, the Municipality of Sierre, and the Mercier family, took over its administration.
