Château Goumoens-la-Ville

Schloss Münchenwiler is a former Cluniac priory, first mentioned in 1080. The priory was dissolved in 1528. Since then, the castle has been privately owned several times. The last owner, Mrs. Couvreu de Goumoens, bequeathed the building to the regional retirement home, which today houses a social-medical center as well as a retirement and nursing home.

From Priory to Castle

The Cluniac priory of Münchenwiler was founded around 1080 by the Lords of Münchenwiler. The priory was dissolved in 1528 during the Reformation. The buildings then fell to the city of Bern, which sold them to private owners in 1530. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands many times.

The Couvreu de Goumoens Era

In 1920, the castle was acquired by Mrs. Couvreu de Goumoens. She had the castle extensively renovated and restored. Mrs. Couvreu de Goumoens lived in the castle until her death in 1970. She bequeathed the building to the regional retirement home.

Architectural Features

The castle core dates back to the Middle Ages and features three square towers and a prison tower. The residential buildings were constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The last lady of the castle, Mrs. Couvreu de Goumoens, bequeathed the building to the regional retirement home, which today houses a social-medical center as well as a retirement and nursing home.
