Château Dunois
Dunois Castle (French: Château Dunois) is located in the center of the French commune of Beaugency in the Loiret department of the Centre region, about 20 kilometers (as the crow flies) west of Orléans. The building was classified as a Monument historique in 1925.
Among the many historic, public, and ecclesiastical buildings of Beaugency is the imposing medieval castle, consisting of a 36-meter-high keep. At a short distance from the 11th-century fortress, Jean de Dunois, Jeanne d'Arc's former companion-in-arms and often called the Bastard of Orléans (French: Bâtard d'Orléans), had the castle named after him built, after he became lord of Beaugency through his marriage to Marie d'Harcourt. He lived in the castle from 1440 to 1457 before making Châteaudun his residence. Until 1789, the castle belonged to the Dunois-Longueville family, after which it stood empty.
Usage+
After initially being used as a poorhouse and later as a holiday colony for the department, the Musée de l'Orléanais, a regional museum for art and tradition, was finally housed in the three-story wing of the castle complex. In addition to various collections on customs in Orléans and the surrounding area, memorabilia of the writer Eugène Sue are on display.
Architecture+
Dunois Castle is a typical 16th-century urban residence with mullioned windows and a 14th/15th-century stair turret. The focal point of the inner courtyard is the hexagonal stair tower, which provides access to the interior rooms of the former main dwelling (Corps de Logis). The rooms have been radically altered over the last two centuries, and only a few wall fireplaces and the attic spaces with their beams are still largely preserved in their original condition.
