Château du Vieux-Bost

To be privately owned

The Château du Vieux Bostz or Vieux Bost is a castle located in Besson, France. It should not be confused with the Château du Bostz (or Nouveau Bostz) which is 500 m to the southwest, beyond a wooded area, a late 19th-century residence also belonging to Charles-Henri de Lobkowicz.

Location+

The castle is located in the commune of Besson, in the Allier department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, southwest of the town. It is accessed by a long tree-lined driveway from the D 65 (road from Besson to Cressanges).

Description+

The castle is located at the back of a main courtyard, enclosed on one side by a common building and on the fourth by the chapel extended by a wrought iron gate.

History+

The first mention of the fief appears upon the death of Pierre Mareschal, dominus de Boscis. The land was acquired in 1578 by a bourgeois from Moulins, Nicolas Chaumas. It then passed through marriages and successions to the Delaunay, Roussel de Tilly, Biotière, Bourbon-Busset families. Madeleine de Bourbon Busset, wife of Xavier de Bourbon-Parme, brought the domain to the House of Bourbon-Parma; through their daughter Françoise, wife of Édouard de Lobkowicz, it passed to their son Charles-Henri, the current owner. The building was listed as a historical monument by decrees of February 13, 1928, and March 22, 1983, and classified by decree of March 22, 1983.
