Château du Rocher
The Château du Rocher is an imposing castle picturesquely situated on the edge of a pond in Mézangers, in the French department of Mayenne. This historic edifice, whose origins date back to the 13th century, captivates with its blend of medieval defensiveness and later Renaissance elements, surrounded by well-maintained French gardens.
History+
The earliest mention of the complex as "Rochier" dates to 1282. It is believed that a primitive castle already existed on this site before the 14th century, with remnants possibly hidden within the thick interior walls of the current building. In the 14th and 15th centuries, a more comfortable manor house was built, still visible today in the western and northern parts. Château du Rocher played a significant role in 1562 when it served as a safe haven for the monks of Notre-Dame d'Évron Abbey, protecting their valuable treasures and relics from a Protestant attack. In the early 16th century, the castle underwent extensive Renaissance-style renovations under the Bouillé family, notably including the addition of an ornate arcaded gallery. Further alterations were made in the 18th century, including new living quarters and a redesign of the entrance area. Since 1963, Château du Rocher has been classified as a historical monument.
