Château des Herbiers

The Château des Herbiers is a medieval fortress from the 14th century located in the town of Les Herbiers. It stands in the town center near the Saint-Pierre church and is one of the few remaining parts of the old defensive system that once surrounded the settlement.

Key Features

It is a rectangular keep (donjon) with exceptionally thick walls — up to 2 meters at the base.

Originally part of a larger fortified complex with moats and walls.

Today, the most visible element is a square tower and parts of the main keep — it has a somewhat massive, austere appearance.

History

The site was an important border stronghold at the crossroads of Anjou, Poitou, and Brittany.

It was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the Middle Ages (including attacks by the English and campaigns by Bertrand du Guesclin).

December 1793: During the Vendée uprising, François Athanase de Charette was elected commander-in-chief of the Catholic and Royal Army inside the castle.

February 1794: Republican "infernal columns" burned the castle and parts of the town.

In the 19th century, it was heavily modified and lost much of its military character.

The town purchased it in 1980. In 1981, the tower partially collapsed and was faithfully rebuilt (with a modern wooden staircase added).
