Château de Wiltz
The Château de Wiltz, a historic castle in northern Luxembourg, is perched on a rocky outcrop in the town of Wiltz. It is a striking edifice that reflects the region's history and now serves as a cultural hub.
History+
The origins of the Château de Wiltz date back to the 12th century, when the Lords of Wiltz sought a more strategically advantageous location for their residence after an earlier complex in Niederwiltz had been repeatedly captured. A new castle was built on a rocky outcrop, laying the foundation for the Oberwiltz district. In 1388, the complex was set on fire by French besiegers but was quickly rebuilt. In the mid-15th century, the castle suffered further destruction during the conflict between the Ösling nobility and the troops of Philip of Burgundy. The oldest preserved part is the Hexenturm (Witches' Tower) from 1573, which was later restored and has borne a knight figure since the 19th century. Under Count Jan, the construction of the current Renaissance castle began in 1631, but its completion was delayed until around 1720 under Count Charles-Eugène de Custine de Wiltz due to the Thirty Years' War and other adversities. The castle chapel was completed in 1722, and the monumental garden staircase in 1727.
