The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte in Maincy, France, is a magnificent castle considered an outstanding example of the classical Baroque style. Built in the mid-17th century, it is renowned for its harmonious design of architecture, interiors, and gardens, which significantly influenced French castle architecture.
History+
Between 1656 and 1661, French Finance Minister Nicolas Fouquet commissioned this impressive castle and its extensive park. The planning was overseen by architect Louis Le Vau, landscape architect André Le Nôtre, and painter Charles Lebrun for the interior design. Three villages had to be relocated for the construction of the estate. In August 1661, Fouquet hosted an opulent feast in honor of King Louis XIV, which caused a sensation due to its wealth and lavish staging, including massive gold tableware. Three weeks later, the king had Fouquet arrested for embezzling state funds and building a fortress without royal consent. Although Fouquet's arrest had been decided before the feast, the legend arose that the king had him imprisoned out of envy for Vaux-le-Vicomte. The castle's beauty became immortalized through this, inspiring Louis XIV to commission the same artists for the expansion of the Versailles hunting lodge. In 1704, Vaux-le-Vicomte was sold to Claude-Louis-Hector de Villars and shortly thereafter elevated to a duchy by Louis XIV.
