Château de Sillé-le-Guillaume

The castle is situated on a hillside, in the center of the town, next to the church. It overlooks the valley below and offers a view of the hills to the southeast.

The castle is composed of four towers, including an imposing keep, as well as a dwelling.

The castle was the residence of the Baron of Sillé-le-Guillaume, one of the ancient baronies of Maine. The original fortified castle was built during the 11th century. The stronghold, being close to Brittany and Normandy, was the scene of numerous battles, including assaults by William the Conqueror and the English army during the Hundred Years' War. It was taken and retaken several times by each side. Damaged, it was reinforced in the 15th century by the baron, but the arrival of gunpowder rendered this restoration useless. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it was made more habitable by its occupants. The castle served as a high school during the 19th century until 1971, before being acquired by the commune.
