Château de Salveterra
Salveterra Castle, or Opoul Castle, is a castle built by James I of Aragon in the 13th century on the border between the Kingdom of France and the Kingdom of Aragon. Located at the top of a 400-meter high plateau, the building was intended to house an entire village with its activities. It was gradually abandoned in favor of the village of Opoul, and in the 21st century is a ruined monument accessible to hikers.
History+
The castle and its village were created by James I of Aragon in 1246. He promised privileges to inhabitants who came to settle within its walls. It was besieged in 1598 and 1639 by French troops. In the 16th century, the village was almost abandoned, its inhabitants having deserted it in favor of the village of Opoul.
Architecture+
Remains of the castle still exist today south of the plateau. They consist of an enclosure protected by a moat, a tower, vaulted rooms, a machicolation, as well as a section of a curtain wall with merlons and loopholes. Two cisterns are also present.
