Château de Saint-Saturnin

The origins of the Château de Saint-Saturnin date back to the 13th century, when it was first mentioned as a possession of the French king. In medieval Gévaudan, it belonged not to the Barons of Canilhac, but to the influential Montferrand family. In the 16th century, Antoine II de la Tour Saint Vidal significantly enhanced the castle through extensive beautification works, including the design of the south facade. In the mid-17th century, the complex was expanded with a west wing connecting the main residential tract to the northwest tower. At that time, the castle presented itself as a quadrangular complex with four towers, a southern main residential tract, a 17th-century western building, northern stables, and eastern ovens. After the death of the last owner, Casimir d'Yzarn de Freissinet de Valady, the castle passed to the Diocese of Mende, which sold it in 1905. The proceeds funded the neo-Gothic portal of Mende Cathedral. By 1968, the castle was in a ruinous state, and a real estate agent sold building components, leading to the collapse of the west building. In 1995, a family acquired the ruin and began restoration, after which the castle was added to the list of historical monuments and has since been rebuilt stone by stone according to historical plans.

The castle is located in Saint-Saturnin in the Lozère department, Languedoc-Roussillon region, France. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 638 m above sea level.

Today, the Château de Saint-Saturnin is privately owned and is continuously being restored. Visitors will find a carefully reconstructed complex that reflects the history and architecture of the region.
