Château de Saint-Mesmin

The history of Château de Saint-Mesmin begins in the 13th century, when the Montfaucon family is first mentioned as its feudal lords. In 1367, a royal decree mandated the fortification of castles to make them defensible. Pierre de Montfaucon, the then lord of Saint-Mesmin, seized the opportunity and carried out extensive fortification works between 1372 and 1375. However, these works were disapproved by his liege lord Guillaume Larchevêque, leading to the castle's destruction and looting in 1375. A lengthy legal battle ensued, concluding only in 1380 with a reordering of feudal relations. In the 16th century, the castle passed by marriage to the du Plessis de La Bourgognière family, followed by the de Vaudrey de Saint Phal family in 1575, who received important rights for the lordship of Saint-Mesmin from Henry III. In 1650, Gilbert Petit acquired the castle, and his family shaped the estate until 1755, when it passed by marriage to the de Vasselot family. During the French Revolution, particularly in January 1794, the castle was set on fire by the 'Infernal Columns,' affecting only parts of the outbuildings and the great tower. In February 1796, a skirmish occurred on the grounds between Vendéens and republican troops. After being sold as national property in 1798, the Proust family acquired the castle in 1818 and used it as a military hospital from 1914 to 1915. From 1990 onwards, an association began its restoration and opened it to the public, leading to its classification as a historical monument in 1993.

The Château de Saint-Mesmin is situated in Saint-André-sur-Sèvre - La Ville, in the Deux-Sèvres department, within the Poitou-Charentes region of France. It stands at an elevation of approximately 154 meters above sea level.

Today, the Château de Saint-Mesmin is privately owned. It is an impressive example of medieval architecture that, after extensive restoration work in the 1980s and 1990s, has been made accessible to visitors and is classified as a historical monument.
