The Castle can be visited

Roquebrune-Cap-Martin Castle, also known as Grimaldi Castle after its former Monegasque owners, was built as early as the end of the 10th century by Conrad I, Count of Ventimiglia, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. It was intended to prevent the renewed foothold of the Saracens, who had previously ravaged the area for almost two centuries. The castle is located at the highest point of the municipality, which has preserved its medieval character to this day.

Since February 28, 1927, the complex has been listed as a Monument historique.

After the Counts of Ventimiglia, the complex passed into the possession of the Counts of Provence. Thereafter, the castle belonged to the Republic of Genoa, and then served the Monegasque Grimaldi family for several centuries. They redesigned the complex and placed artillery in the castle for defense. Initially, the castle was a fortress-like complex that also surrounded the former village with a protective wall with six gates. In the 15th century, the keep took on the name of the castle. The rest of the fortified complex was gradually filled with residential buildings by the present-day village.

In 1808, the castle came into private ownership when it was bought by five citizens of the town, before being acquired in 1911 by the Briton Sir William Ingram. He donated the complex to the municipality in 1921.

The Keep+

The keep is probably the oldest preserved in France. It is 26 meters high and has walls two to four meters thick. Inside are the reception hall, the guardroom, and the chambers of the count's family. From its platform, there is a panoramic view over the town, the Mediterranean Sea, Cap Martin, and the Principality of Monaco up to Mont Agel.
